While other kids in his Oaxacan town were
outside playing, Alex was inside practicing the guitar and
singing to no one in particular! From early on Alex showed signs
of his love and passion for music!
Because of his father’s influence to have a
real job, Alex ended up studying electronics in school. After
graduation he went on to study dentistry, his father’s back up
career. During his second year of college his dad died, leaving
behind his life’s passion, Christian ministry! His father was
the very successful pastor of a fast growing church with 36
missions throughout the state of Oaxaca. But his death also left
a deep void in the heart of his youngest son—a void that Alex
would try to fill by pursuing a career in music.
Alex set his heart on making a name for
himself in the music world. He was willing to pay any price, to
do whatever was necessary to get it, which included walking away
from the Christian heritage of his father. Alex moved from
Oaxaca to Texas. Persistence paid off and in 1989 he got the
first taste of the fame he was after—a recording contract with
CBS Records for a five-album deal!
Sony bought his contract from CBS and
changed his name to Alex Montez. His first single went right to
the top of the Tejano and Mexican charts! Smooth, beautiful,
flashy, Alex toured the US and Mexico, receiving music awards
for his many hits. It didn’t take long to add the title “Record
Producer” to his growing list of credits. Alex was on his way up
the star studded ladder, and audiences were at his feet.
What goes up in the music business often
comes down… hard. Along with his meteoric rise to fame came one
moral flame out after another. It wasn’t long before his new
lifestyle landed in a divorce court, and along with it, the
disintegration of his family. On June 25th, 1996,
Alex put a gun to his chest and pulled the trigger. The bullet
did a lot of damage, but it didn’t take his life.
When he got out of the intensive care unit
of the hospital he remembered and returned to the God of his
father.
Since that time he has been singing new
songs! Alex married recording star Lizza (Lisa) Lamb in 1997,
and they began attending Life Church together. Soon afterward
they began singing on the worship team and serving in the
church. After four years of intense Bible study and personal
discipleship they took the next step… and answered the call to
pastor.
Today Alex and Lisa reside in Angleton,
Texas, where they serve as the Pastors of La Vida Regional
Cuadrangular, a church for Spanish speaking people that would
make his father proud! Alex is also the mastermind behind the
video and TV ministry. His new life is proof that no matter how
long and hard the road, God can use and work all things together
for good!
