Food & Dietary Concerns
Mark 7:15-23 — There is nothing that enters a man from
outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of
him, those are the things that defile a man. If anyone has ears
to hear, let him hear!” When He had entered a house away from
the crowd, His disciples asked Him concerning the parable. So He
said to them, “Are you thus without understanding also? Do you
not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot
defile him, because it does not enter his heart but his stomach,
and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?” And He
said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. For from
within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts,
adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness,
wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride,
foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a
man.”
Matthew 6:25-26 — “Therefore I say to you, do not worry
about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor
about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than
food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the
air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet
your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than
they?
Romans 14:14-23 — I know and am convinced by the Lord
Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him
who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is
unclean. Yet if your brother is grieved because of your
food, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with
your food the one for whom Christ died. Therefore do not let
your good be spoken of as evil; for the kingdom of God is not
eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the
Holy Spirit. For he who serves Christ in these things is
acceptable to God and approved by men. Therefore let us pursue
the things which make for peace and the things by which
one may edify another. Do not destroy the work of God for the
sake of food. All things indeed are pure, but it is
evil for the man who eats with offense. It is good neither to
eat meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your
brother stumbles or is offended or is made weak. Do you have
faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he
who does not condemn himself in what he approves. But he who
doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not
eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is
sin.
1 Corinthians 8:4-13 — Therefore concerning the eating of
things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing
in the world, and that there is no other God but one. For
even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth
(as there are many gods and many lords), yet for us there is
one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for
Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all
things, and through whom we live. However, there is
not in everyone that knowledge; for some, with consciousness of
the idol, until now eat it as a thing offered to an idol;
and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. But food does not
commend us to God; for neither if we eat are we the better, nor
if we do not eat are we the worse. But beware lest somehow this
liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak.
For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol’s
temple, will not the conscience of him who is weak be emboldened
to eat those things offered to idols? And because of your
knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
But when you thus sin against the brethren, and wound their weak
conscience, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food makes my
brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my
brother stumble.
1 Corinthians 10:23-33 — All things are lawful for me,
but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me,
but not all things edify. Let no one seek his own, but each one
the other’s well-being. Eat whatever is sold in the meat
market, asking no questions for conscience’ sake; for “the
earth is the
Lord’s, and
all its fullness.” If any of those who do not believe invites
you to dinner, and you desire to go, eat whatever is set
before you, asking no question for conscience’ sake. But if
anyone says to you, “This was offered to idols,” do not eat it
for the sake of the one who told you, and for conscience’ sake;
for “the earth is the
Lord’s, and
all its fullness.” “Conscience,” I say, not your own, but that
of the other. For why is my liberty judged by another man’s
conscience? But if I partake with thanks, why am I evil spoken
of for the food over which I give thanks? Therefore,
whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the
glory of God. Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the
Greeks or to the church of God, just as I also please all men
in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the
profit of many, that they may be saved.
Colossians 2:16-23 — So let no one judge you in food or
in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths,
which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of
Christ. Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in
false humility and worship of angels, intruding into
those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his
fleshly mind, and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all
the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments,
grows with the increase that is from God. Therefore, if
you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world,
why, as though living in the world, do you subject
yourselves to regulations— “Do not touch, do not taste, do not
handle,” which all concern things which perish with the using—
according to the commandments and doctrines of men? These things
indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion,
false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of
no value against the indulgence of the flesh.
1 Timothy 4:1-5 — Now the Spirit expressly says that in
latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to
deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in
hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,
forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods
which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who
believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is
good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with
thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by the word of God and
prayer.
Hebrews 13:9 — Do not be carried about with various and
strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be
established by grace, not with foods which have not profited
those who have been occupied with them.
Acts 10:9-15 — The next day, as they went on their
journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to
pray, about the sixth hour. Then he became very hungry and
wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance
and saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound at
the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth.
In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild
beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. And a voice came
to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” But Peter said, “Not so,
Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.” And a
voice spoke to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed
you must not call common.”
