Strife and Argument
Proverbs 13:10 — By pride comes nothing but strife, But
with the well-advised is wisdom.
2 Timothy 2:23-26 — But avoid foolish and ignorant
disputes, knowing that they generate strife. And a servant of
the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach,
patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if
God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know
the truth, and that they may come to their senses and
escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive
by him to do his will.
James 3:16 — For where envy and self-seeking exist,
confusion and every evil thing are there.
Proverbs 20:3 — It is honorable for a man to stop
striving, Since any fool can start a quarrel.
James 4:1-5 — Where do wars and fights come from
among you? Do they not come from your desires
for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not
have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war.
Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not
receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on
your pleasures. Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know
that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever
therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an
enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain,
“The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?
Matthew 5:38-48 — “You have heard that it was said,
‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I tell you
not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your
right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue
you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak
also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.
Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from
you do not turn away. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You
shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to
you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to
those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you
and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in
heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good,
and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love
those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax
collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only,
what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax
collectors do so? Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your
Father in heaven is perfect.
Romans 12:14-21 — Bless those who persecute you; bless
and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with
those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not
set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do
not be wise in your own opinion. Repay no one evil for evil.
Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is
possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all
men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give
place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine,
I will repay,” says the Lord. Therefore “If your enemy is
hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink;
For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
1 Corinthians 11:17-19 — Now in giving these instructions
I do not praise you, since you come together not for the
better but for the worse. For first of all, when you come
together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you,
and in part I believe it. For there must also be factions among
you, that those who are approved may be recognized among you.
Proverbs 6:12-15 — A worthless person, a wicked man,
Walks with a perverse mouth; He winks with his eyes, He shuffles
his feet, He points with his fingers; Perversity is in
his heart, He devises evil continually, He sows discord.
Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly; Suddenly he shall be
broken without remedy.
1 Thessalonians 5:13-15 — and to esteem them very highly
in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves. Now
we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the
fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. See that no
one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is
good both for yourselves and for all.
Proverbs 17:20 — He who has a deceitful heart finds no
good, And he who has a perverse tongue falls into evil.
Proverbs 18:6-7 — A fool’s lips enter into contention,
And his mouth calls for blows. A fool’s mouth is his
destruction, And his lips are the snare of his soul.
Proverbs 28:25 — He who is of a proud heart stirs up
strife, But he who trusts in the
Lord will be
prospered.
1 Corinthians 6:5-8 — I say this to your shame. Is it so,
that there is not a wise man among you, not even one, who will
be able to judge between his brethren? But brother goes to law
against brother, and that before unbelievers! Now therefore, it
is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against
one another. Why do you not rather accept wrong? Why do you not
rather let yourselves be cheated? No, you yourselves do
wrong and cheat, and you do these things to your
brethren!
1 Peter 2:13-21 — Therefore submit yourselves to every
ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as
supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for
the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those
who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you
may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men— as free, yet
not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of
God. Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God.
Honor the king. Servants, be submissive to your
masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also
to the harsh. For this is commendable, if because of
conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully.
For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your
faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer,
if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God.
For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for
us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:
Luke 6:27-36 — “But I say to you who hear: Love your
enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse
you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. To him who
strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And
from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your
tunic either. Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who
takes away your goods do not ask them back. And just as
you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. “But if
you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For
even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to
those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even
sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom
you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even
sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. But love your
enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and
your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most
High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. Therefore be
merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.
Romans 15:1-7 — We then who are strong ought to bear with
the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each
of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to
edification. For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it
is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached You fell
on Me.” For whatever things were written before were written
for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of
the Scriptures might have hope. Now may the God of patience and
comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another,
according to Christ Jesus, that you may with one mind and
one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us,
to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8 — Love suffers long and is
kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not
puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not
provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but
rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things,
hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. But
whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether
there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is
knowledge, it will vanish away.
